The Webinar That Changed My Life [Weekend WRAP 119]

Published 3 months ago • 2 min read

Hey Reader,

Once again I write this to you the night before it sends. For me, there is very little of a content queue. I have a collection of notes and prompts that I use to write quickly, even if I’m not “inspired.”

It’s not because I’m disorganized, procrastinating, or don’t want to write — I’m just busy. And as a creator, sometimes you just gotta buckle down and do the thing even when the clock approaches midnight.

But I share this with you today because it’s very aligned with why I’m so busy this week — it’s because the HeyCreator Summit starts on Monday! I’ve already talked about how great the speakers are and how conferences have impacted my life and career, so I won’t get back into all that. But I will tell you a quick story…

The Webinar That Changed My Life

In 2015 I was working part-time jobs and trying to break into tech. One of my part-time jobs was working at a tech company writing help docs and recording product walkthroughs. I thought it was gonna be a full-time thing… until it wasn’t. I had even said no to a full-time teaching gig the week before.

I was 31, had a 4 month old son, no beard, and basically no job. So of course, I went to a conference that weekend. That conference was Tribe, hosted by my friend Jeff Goins. At the conference I connected with Bryan Harris, who at the time ran a popular site called Videofruit (it’s a long story). I told him I was looking for work and he said he would keep his antenna up.

The very next week, I saw Bryan was hosting a webinar with Nathan Barry, founder of ConvertKit. At the time, ConvertKit had less than 500 customers (and I happened to be one). I attended this free, virtual webinar about how creators could use email marketing and took a few notes.

As legend has it, after the webinar Nathan and Bryan were talking about ConvertKit’s growth. Nathan mentioned they were starting to get more customers and expected even more, because Pat Flynn was going to promote it soon. They probably needed more help on the support side. To which Bryan said, “Have you met Matt? He’s the one that did those cool notes…”

…and the rest is history.

Opportunities to Show Up & Connect

When you take the initiative to show up, learn, and connect with others — incredible, life changing things can happen. You might meet a new friend, a business partner, or client at HeyCreator. Because it’s online, and FREE, you can attend no matter where you are. And I hope you do.

Even if you don’t think of yourself as a content creator, there are a few sessions I know you’ll get a lot out of. For example (all times ET).

  • Khe Hy is talking about productivity methods on Monday at 3:00pm.
  • Ryder Carroll (yes, the Bullet Journal creator!) is talking about aligning values with action on Wednesday at 3:00pm.
  • Amanda Goetz is talking about productivity without burnout on Friday at 12:00pm. She’s a mother of 3, founder, and creator I know you’ll love.

If you’re itching for the regular WRAP content, don’t fret 😅 We will resume normal scheduling and formatting next Saturday. But I know this is an event that you’ll get massive value from, no matter how much you’re able to watch live.

I hope to see you there, and please say hi in the chat!

Matt
