WRAP #127: Content > Connection

Hey Reader, I published a lot of non-newsletter content this week! I'll share a quick list below and weave it into different parts of the newsletter. Thanks for reading!

πŸ’‘ The Big Idea

Connection > Content

One of the biggest lessons I've learned in launching the HeyCreator community is this:

Content is abundant, but connection is scarce.

Even when you can connect with anyone on social media, there's a difference when you're in a place where everyone is driving towards the same goal.

It's a special feeling to be a part of a group where you can cheer each other on and have a shared understand of the ups and downs of the journey. I'm not teaching anything groundbreaking in our weekly calls. The content could be found in lots of other places, like how to set up an email newsletter and sell a course.

Do I teach it well? Do I make complicated stuff easier to understand? Yes, I do that. But it's not that much better than many other experts I know. What's special are the people, and the fact we're all connected on the journey now. That's the special sauce.

My friend, Tim Grahl, told me his community of writers has a "no bleachers" mentality. It means that everyone contributes and everyone is out in the arena doing the thing β€” for people in HeyCreator that means making videos, recording podcasts, writing essays, shipping products β€” including myself! I'm in the process of launching a mastermind and building a new version of my $1K Course Blueprint. I'm not immune to the same issues that may plague you!

It's the connection to other people in the community (and at our company) that helps pull me through. I could learn through content on YouTube or any other number of places, but the ability to connect with others keeps me motivated.

Ready to grow your creator business?

Founders Mastermind starting April 15 β†’ Apply Now!

The HeyCreator community has gotten off to a very strong start this year β€” we have more than 500 creators who are making a commitment to build a business they love. Members are growing their email lists, defining their brand for stronger content, and launching new products to their audiences.

But I'm also getting a lot of requests for more in-depth coaching, which is why Darrell and I decided to start the Founders Mastermind next month. If you're a creator making over $100,000 and want to grow to $200,000 (and more) in the next year β€” I highly recommend applying! I wrote a letter to the HeyCreator community with more details, check it out and apply here.

βœ… To-Do Tactic

10 Blocks Daily

One of my most popular early YouTube videos is the 10 block method. I realized I was scheduling too many meetings in the week, which led to a problem. I organize my tasks and time into different buckets, but I wasn't noticing when one bucket, e.g. meetings, was getting too crowded. This oversight caused me to struggle with setting limits and to end up working extra hours.

The original design of this method and chart was based on a 40 hour work week, and ten 4 hour blocks. This week I started modifying it to be ten 30 minute blocks, or 5 hours of focused work each day.

The purpose here is not to track every single task, but dedicate time and attention to the tasks and projects that "move the needle" in my business. I did this because I was getting too bogged down in downhill work and not protecting enough time for the uphill work that would lead to my "summit of success."

Making Decisions, Better

I received several emails about last week's newsletter on having the courage to make decisions and learn from the results. Seeking the best path, learning as much as you can, getting advice from others β€” all good things! But don't get trapped there or delegate your own decision making power to others.

The WRAP is sponsored by

Mighty Networks: Your Ultimate Community Partner

I've known about Mighty Networks for a number of years and got used to the platform being a part of BuJo U and Jack Butcher's communities. My wife also loves the Yoga with Adrienne community. So I was stoked to meet the Founder, Gina Bianchini, at the ConvertKit podcast show in LA. I'm going to develop the Digital Dad community with Mighty Networks, and if you're interested in building community you should check out Mighty too!
