đź’ˇ Idea of the Week: The Tail End of Rock Shows

I'm the oldest of five kids and are fortunate to all be really close. It's one of the biggest blessings in my life. We don't agree on everything—like college football—and we have different perspectives—for instance, in music.

I like folk/Americana/rock (my brother Mark is similar), but Neil likes really hard rock. Music I never really listened to. But when Neil texted us and said his favorite band—Bring Me The Horizon—was playing at a festival this weekend, it was time to mount up and enter the mosh pit.

The show was great and the crowd was insane (in a good way). The term "a sea of people" had never been more appropriate. I could feel the ebbs and flows of the music through the crowd (we worked our way to the front). I was on high alert for 75 minutes and burned 2000 calories (thanks Whoop).

But the most important part was the time with my brothers. We're all close, but we still don't see each other that often. Neil lives back home in Jacksonville and we certainly don't get together for concerts often. Since I/we started leaving home, we have only done 2-3 of these overnights together.

The reality is if this stays consistent, we will only go to a few more rock shows together. I also don't know how many more times we (or I) will have the energy to wind our way to the front and jump for an hour. It was a unique experience, and understanding that collection of circumstances from the start made it worth every minute.

The Tail End is one of the most important essays I have read. It's inspired and instructed many decisions, including the one to go to a metal festival. It makes me realize the stark math of it all. If I see my parents:

5ish times a year ✖️ 3-4 days each ✖️ 25-30 years to live 🟰

We have 100-150 more trips together and 300-500 days. That's just 1/18th of the time I spent with them in my childhood. And that's all we have left. It's morbid, but it also brings a lot of clarity and presence to each day and each opportunity. It's why I'll go camping with my sons as much as they want.

It's also why I jumped—literally—at the chance for a bro trip to see a metal show and pushed all the way down to the front. For bro time 👨🏻‍🎤👨🏻‍🎤👨🏻‍🎤
