Before You Build an Empire

Published over 8 years ago • 1 min read

I was on a call last week with a friend, and we were talking about building a business and connecting with people who would support it.

He's really early in his process, and I admire him (and anyone) who jumps into this crazy world of thinking you can build something you believe in.

Just as he was leaving, my friend signed off with a statement that really caught me.

Well, back to building my empire!

What caught me is that he is super early in the process that takes a long time to get in rhythm with. He hadn't made a single sale of anything, and had just signed up with an email provider (ConvertKit, of course).

There's nothing wrong with big ambitions and dreams. But before we build empires and make six-figure deals, you will have much more success now and in the future by starting small.

Like a lemonade stand.

Before you sell a $1,000 product, can you find a group of people who will buy something for $1?

$10?

$100?

You'll build a more sustainable model and be able to scale faster by starting with small products. Keep the empire on your mind, but act on what you can create, share, and sell this week.

Thanks for reading,

Matt
